Being The Dream

Picture
Take one very inquisitive, Scots-born, African/American and expose this soul to 25+ years of Scottish culture, collaborating with fellow Scottish artists such as Robert Burns and Simple Minds, arguably two of Scotland's most important creative forces ever; add nine years of life as an Italian celebrity working the venues and locales of that beautiful country; move him to Southern California where he put in 15 years as a sound engineer/musician, before relocating to New York City, the world's cultural melting pot, the perfect place to process his life experiences, channelling the art he believes it is his destiny to produce and you get what we call Anacoustic Mind aka Mike Ogletree: A multi-cultural synthesis of Scottish Soul, Poetry and Music.

My Nanie O

Lyrics: Robert Burns (1783),
Music: Anacoustic Mind (2011)

One of Burns' earliest recorded poems which he introduces in this version in the Stair Manuscript thus "The following songs were all done at a very early period of life and consequently are incorrect". Here he describes himself as a country plow boy with little cash and without a care in the world while he has the love of his girlfriend Nanie.
In this last page Burns compares himself with the farmer for whom he works, who for all his wealth he cannot be more at ease with his condition than Burns as a common plow boy with not a care in the world than his love for Nanie.
Burns must have written it while at Lochlie farm around 1777. He later on 26 Oct 1792 discusses it with George Thomson with regard to the euphonic value of the name of the river in the first line. Burns' brother Gilbert surmised that Nanie was probably Agnes Fleming, daughter of a neighboring farmer at Coldcothill or Doura.
(Special thanks to David D'Arcy bass and Jonnie Miles cajon)

Behind yon hills where Lugar flows,
'Mang moors an' mosses many, O,
The wintry sun the day has clos'd,
And I'll awa to Nanie, O.

The westlin wind blaws loud an' shill;
The night's baith mirk and rainy, O;
But I'll get my plaid an' out I'll steal,
An' owre the hill to Nanie, O.

My Nanie's charming, sweet, an' young;
Nae artfu' wiles to win ye, O:
May ill befa' the flattering tongue
That wad beguile my Nanie, O.
Her face is fair, her heart is true;
As spotless as she's bonie, O:
The op'ning gowan, wat wi' dew,
Nae purer is than Nanie, O.

A country lad is my degree,
An' few there be that ken me, O;
But what care I how few they be,
I'm welcome aye to Nanie, O.

My riches a's my penny-fee,
An' I maun guide it cannie, O;
But warl's gear ne'er troubles me,
My thoughts are a' my Nanie, O.

Our auld guidman delights to view
His sheep an' kye thrive bonie, O;
But I'm as blythe that hands his pleugh,
An' has nae care but Nanie, O.

Come weel, come woe, I care na by;
I'll tak what Heav'n will sen' me, O:
Nae ither care in life have I,
But live, an' love my Nanie, O.
